Software internship programme pushes OSS

Lulatech, a software development consortium, is in the process of accepting applications for an internship and training programme. Students will receive training and practical experience in a variety of IT-related fields. A key aim for the programme is the promotion of open source software.

The reasoning behind the programme, says Lulatech managing director Denis Akulay, is that few IT students are exposed to work while doing their studies and when they get opportunity of working, they don’t always deliver what is expected from them.

"To promote the skills development in South Africa, we are running a few projects that will develop ICT skills of students, create professionalism in them and instill more confidence in their ability to compete in the global marketplace."

The project will give students an opportunity to work on the development of websites and portals. In addition to the technical side of website management, they will also learn the important, yet oft-neglected, aspects of marketing and sales.

They will utilise open source tools such as Mambo, Joomla and Dolphin. PHP and MySQL will also be focused on.

"This will facilitate skills transfer, capacities building and promote their economic viability. The project provides them with an opportunity for practical exposure and at the same time it provides an income generation opportunity that goes a long way in assisting them with tuition, books, and related academic requirements," said Akulay.

Lulatech is currently conducting interviews to whittle down 224 applicants from the University of Johannesburg to the required 40 students, who will be working in groups of four.

"We had a lot complaints about the number of positions, people wanted us to have more," said Akulay. Due to limits to infrastructure and funding, Akulay explained that it was not feasible for them to offer the quality of training that they wanted to a larger group.

The programme, which runs from the beginning of October till June, is structured with alternating month-long periods of training and practical experience.

Although they are already conducting interviews, Akulay said that last-minute applications would still be accepted from interested students.

He said that they are also still on the lookout for companies or individuals that can assist with training in Joomla, Mambo, PHP and MySQL.

The consortium will be giving another presentation at the Knysna municipality, where they are hoping to recruit 40 IT students or unemployed people to join the programme.
